Batman comic books continued...

The story line of the Batman comic books revolves around Batman, a vigilante superhero in a city tainted with crime and corruption—the GothamCity. Citizens of Gotham feared countless costumed criminal identities, gangs and common thugs. Only Batman is bold and incorruptible enough to fight such evil doings.

During the day, Batman becomes the billionaire philanthropist, Bruce Wayne, the heir of Wayne Enterprises. He is orphaned by his socialite parents when both were assaulted by an unknown mobster right in front of the young Bruce. He was 8 years old back then.

With above-average intelligence and exceptional physical capabilities, coupled with sophisticated technological gadgets, plausible only through Wayne Enterprises’ wealth, Batman is able to become the masked hero GothamCity needs. He goes out at night in his black costume to guard the city against evil deeds. He then became an icon amongst citizens of Gotham because of his extraordinary abilities and his inexorable fight against crime.

The initial storyline of Batman comic books were written by Bill Finger and illustrated by Bob Kane. Finger created a Batman character that seeks revenge for the ruthless murder of his parents. During the first issues, Batman is deemed to be a character who is never hesitant to kill even if it means he have to sacrifice himself. His first ever super villain is The Joker—a psychopath who is notorious for killing his victims through mutilation, if not, by using a specially made toxic chemical. The advent of American patriotism during World War II greatly influenced various plot and character changes in the Batman series. For one, The Joker’s mad brutality was downplayed to that of a playful trickster. So instead of disturbing psychological assaults, Joker settled for the less harsh gimmickry.

During the early Batman era, villains in GothamCity are mostly deemed as capable of pure evil intents. It was in the 1970s when Batman villains turned out to be psychosocially motivated in their actions. Themes such as personality disorders and defense mechanisms, child abuse and trauma and power struggles were being explored by writers. All the other characters including Batman himself were depicted as three-dimensional characters possessing realistic internal conflicts as compared to the flat vengeful character that he was. One perfect example is how Frank Miller redefined the character of Batman in The Dark Knight Returns. With Miller’s new depiction, Batman suddenly became an uncompromising vigilante who turns out to be a misunderstood outcast in the eyes of Gotham’s social elite circle. Miller portrayed Batman as an anti-hero, a character with a dark past. In fact, in the Infinite Crisis crossover, Batman’s story revolved around his nervous breakdown and his struggle to find his true philosophy in life and living. The ongoing Batman issues still revert back to the more traditional Batman portrayals of the 1970s.
